Cheta Cheta...

When was the last time you got impressed with a waiter?

Waiters, Managers - Note This!

I'm not sure If I'm the only one feeling this way about waiters in most hotels ( big and small). One thing I have noticed is that it's very difficult to get their attention of waiter to the table. ( to place order for additional item or a refill or tissue.)

It looks like they are in another world, quite distant and walk around as if their only job is the be around and appear busy. (Btw, it's not for all waiters) I know there are few remarkable waiters but off late I haven't see any lately!)

Questions to waiters and Hotel managers/owners

  • What is it so hard for waiters to look around?
  • Why do they have tunnel vision?
  • How loud should we shout to get their attention?
  • Why is most service crappy even when we pay tips?
  • What will motivate waiters to serve food with a smile?
  • When a guest leaves the table do they the courtesy to smile or show the door?
  • Is is hard to smile? Is the job not fit for you?
  • What kind of training manual is available to waiters?

Yesterday, I went to a near by bar and as usual we ordered two beers. While it all started okay, but after a while we could see the signs of typical waiter weakness syndrome. ( Just a name).

From the adjacent table, guys were calling out- cheta, cheta to get the waiter's attention! Typical scenario!

Remarkable Waiters - Are they made or trained?

Well, training, motivation is all good but they hardly work as workforce keeps changing. What I would say is to use technology. One such simple way to get the attention of of waiter is to use a buzzer or a remote button.  I recently watched a YouTube channel of a Malayalee girl's sharing her life in Japan  In one episode she goes to a small hotel to have food. In that hotel, she uses a button kept on the the table to notify the waiter to get her order. Probably, we should try the same in our hotels here.

Here's the plan:

1. Keep a small button in each table.

2. The button will either ring or buzz or vibrate to notify the waiter. It would be great if waiter wears a smart watch and the vibration or notification is seen on the watch ( Table 7)

3. Order food via QR Code. I have seen it at Bob's Bar in B"lore. It's fast and easy to track the order and billing

4. Use a good camera to cover the floor where it can be monitored and timely attention can be given ( Not practicable idea)

5. Ring a bell ( Simple but it can be annoying to others)

So, which one will you try?

Btw, have you experienced being ignored by waiters or have you felt that you can be a waiter and do the job many times better.

Btw, is there any award given to the most remarkable waiter? What if Facebook Groups like Eat to Eat Trivandrum or Where in Trivandrum, or any influencer can spot remarkable waiter and give an appropriate recognition.

Everyone can learn from a remarkable behavior. How to see their service in action? Which hotel (small or big) has the best service?
