Sitting is the New Smoking ๐Ÿšฌ- Reminder Buzzer In the Chair

Sedentary Lifestyle - Not Good for Seniors

Ha!

We got a problem with a senior at home. She just sits most of her time in a chair. Her movements out of the chair is less. One reason is her self talk that she's past her prime and it's time either to sit and watch T.V or be in the bed. Her logic seems hard for me to decipher. My fair guess is that many senior citizens get into that rut as they loose the appetite for life.

I asked ChatGPT for a solution and it gave some generic ones - such as,  have patience, give them some activity which they are interested, take them outside, etc.

So, today while I was thinking of this, I felt there should be some way to easily remind her that she has sat on the chair for more than 30 minutes. And, this is a problem. How on earth can we regularly follow up, see that she steps out of the chair!

And, this is when this epiphany got on me!

What if there's a buzzer fixed on the chair which alerts on when time is exceeded?

Here's how it can work. Btw, it can work in corporate officers where employees often sit-in-one-go for a longer period of time.

1. The chair should have a smart device or sensor attached to the seating pad.

2. Each chair can be tracked through an app - which track the hours and activity on the chair.

3. Chair will vibrate or beep based on setting. Also, the mobile app will alert the user, when the person exceeds the amount ( Time can be set )

4. Another possible functionality in such chair is the use of rollers inside the seating pad which will activate when a person sits beyond a certain time. At least, this will improve the blood circulation in the buttocks area or alert the user to move out of the chair.

5. Yet another functionality of the chair is the remote tracking.Using the app, anyone can monitor the time spends on the chair.
For example, kids living outside can monitor if  their parents are sitting for a longer period and track their movement. What if there's a voice alert ( recorded voice of the kid)! Imagine, if an aged amma or appa or appachi sits for a long time, then the built-in speaker in the chair will tell out in their son's or daughter's voice that it's time to move.

Smart AI Chairs

when I googled about this concept, I found that such chairs are already there in the market. So, my idea is pretty late nor novel.

What's Next with Smart Chairs!
Probably such chairs are in the market, but I haven't heard of it being used in IT companies! So, why not make this chairs a common item in all offices, IT Parks, tech centres and even in co-working spaces.

Recently there has been many reports of toxic work culture in corporate sector. A young girl from Kochi died in Pune. Her parents allege the company's work culture as the source of stress and that has resulted in her death.

Moreover, there was a report of rising cardiac arrests in young employees at Technopark, Trivandrum

When such incidents are on the rise, we tend to ask a lot of questions - questions about work culture, employee rest time,  unrealistic timelines in office, time at the desk, etc.

Overall, we would be interested to know about the employee well-being. Probably, the management and the employee should know more about working habits, work stress and the ideal weight of work. Do the HR team understand this issue and do they discuss about this? Do the management and the employee know where the line that separates from excessive work and moderate work. Of course, we know there are days in office where work peak! But, that shouldn't be the status quo.

Few related questions an employee should know and the management too
  1. Are they glued to the chair for a long time?
  2. Did they take regular breaks?
  3. How long do they sit without stepping out?

Do you think such chairs ( built in sensors) can bring some kind of relief to people who are working for long hours?

Just a thought!

Btw, Indian chair brands can take a cue from this post and do something about it asap. Our seniors will thank you , so would the people who work by sitting ( IT Companies, Banks, etc) and their parents too, knowing that their well-being is taken care by companies.

Will our chair companies like Godrej, Pepperfry, Godrej Interio, DROGO Ergonomic Office Chair, SAVYA HOME Jasper Ergonomic High Back Office, Misuraa,Nilkamal, Steelcase, Featherlite ergonomic Chair, Cellbell, etc ( Probably, I can mail this concept to them)

Btw, govt can make it mandatory for companies beyond 30 employees to have such chairs for their employees.
