Navara fish - Pink Perch |
Price List at a fish store in Trivandrum |
Two days back I went to this store to buy fish for our daily use. One thing, I often feel when I look at the price list is this - where is the price of the fish I want. As the names are scattered around, I have to look all around to spot it.
So, today I was thikning of another way to record the list. What if they do some basic caterory so that the regular folks like me can easily find the price without looking all around.
For example, they can group pricy ones on the top. Fishes like neymeen ( king fish), Moda (coiba) , Pomfret and Choora ( tuna), etc.
Next they can have a list of prawns, crabs etc ( Group these in another segment - Add a bit of humour too - blistering barnacles...)
And a third list, which has all the low budget ones to mid range ones - mathi, ayila and other varieties.
At least by making three or four groups, we can instantly reach the information without scanning from top to bottom!
Also, there are buyers who are not familiar with the Malayalam name. So, few fish names could be written in English.
Finally, about the fish on display. Why can't they keep a small board with the name of the fish. This will reduce the need for the customer to ask the employee about the name and other details. Also, along with the name they can add price info.
Another thing I felt was this - they can sell few items which are commonly used for making fish curry. It could be type types of tamarind. If they can source it from a locally grown seller, it will add more value. Also, few clay pots for making fish curry. If the tasks of doing this is a hassle, they can get a vendor to supply it to them. These people get a margin for each sale!
What say?

P.S - What are the other ways a fish store can help or support customers and be remarkable in their own way?
1. Share a fish recipe ( Tried one). Suppose a customer has a recipe and it works out well, then it could be shared with many other. Either share it on their whatsapp group, or keep a QR code which takes them to that particular recipe
2. Share details of cooking lessons - many people are not sure on how to clean the fish, how to make fish curry, etc. What if they share details of someone in the city who takes fish curry lessons.
