4 Practical Tips for Waiters at Fine Dining Places - Become Memorable

Waiters at Restaurant - Remarkable ones gets Noticed & Picked!

Yesterday, ( 24/7/24), we went to a so-called biggie restaurant near Thampanoor for dinner. We were a team of team of seven and out of that three were oldies.

Here are few observations about the service and how waiters could have done much better service!

1. We ordered ala-carte menu. So, while ordering food, it would have been great if the waitress gave us a clear suggestion about the time it will take to get the food on the table. (No Clear mention of it). Only when the food was getting time, then she said that kitchen prepares all dishes as per order. ( Right!)

We had senior citizen, had taken insulin injection and so, she was restless when food was getting late.

What could be done - Give instructions to the guests about the best way to order - Soups ( time) Starter ( time) Main Course (Time) and Dessert. How to order so that everything flows in the right time.

What happens is that customers might get engrossed in conversation or even forget about the time delay. So, it's better to explain the timing. Also, in our case we aren't regulars at such big places so, we often make this mistake.

2. Restaurant was not full. Occupancy was around 30%. Meaning, there was a lot of time for waiters to see to our needs.

3. We asked one girl to take a pic. She took the picture but all us appeared small in the frame.  One of us was telling her to come closer so that we can get a tight frame pic. It seems that she is not able to understand that or not interested. ( Train your staff to take good pics, using Android and Apple phone. Also, help customers to take good food pics, from different angles). Even shoot good videos. Probably, one of the waiter who has the flair in taking good pics could be given additional training to take very good food and restaurant pics. After all, customers are coming to have a good time, and these pictures leave a lasting impression and memory of the time spend in your hotel. More importantly, good pictures get shared!

4. When the order was taken, we ordered one starter and that was missed. At the end of the dinner, we said that she had missed serving it. She went and checked in her system and said it's not told. Of course, we discussed about Karimeen fry. But, somewhere the item got leaked. Did we miss it when she repeated the order, or did she not punch that into the system. Anyways, the good looking waiter girl was not happy and with that she was not seen around anymore.

Mistakes happen ( It could be customer's fault or it could be with the waiter). Which ever way, as a waiter, try to recompose and bring back the cheer. Shrug off the mistake ( even when the mistake is with the customer) , and try your best to serve with a smile. Well, there are really irritating customers, in that case, you can transfer the table to someone who can mange it well. Also, don't take all these personally! It's all part of the service industry thingie.

5. Avoid showing open resentment with other staff  in front of the customers
This happened during our visit. We told one lady staff to serve fried rice to the person sitting in one corner of the table. She didn't hear it or she understood it wrongly. So, carried it to the serving table, instead of serving it. Upon seeing it, another male staff snatched it from her and served it correctly. Here the staff shouldn't have showed his anger to his colleague. Whatever said and done must be done after the customer leaves the table. Settle all these after the show is over. Do Not Show Your Petty Fights Out in the Open!

I have seen this type of attitude is many places, especially in general provision stores which are run by owners. Often, in the heat of things, owners shout at the employee, that too in front of the customer. This is a big NO!

6. While leaving the table, the lady who took the order was in another corner. There was no one to give a nod and make us feel happy with the experience. ( Sad) Is it that we paid less tips. Only 200 bucks!

7. Is there a badge given to an waiter who's is the star waiter of the restaurant? Is it a good way to give recognition to waiter. Suppose, a celebrity comes to the dining section, I guess only the star or the best performing waiters will given that table. Isn't so?

Just thinking? Are all waiters made equal?
