Bevco at Molavana - Whose Job is it anyway? |
What's the job of an employee in a Govt office or a KSRTC or at BEVCO or at MILMA or at Tourism Dept?
Is it just to sit on a chair, push papers around, and return back home? Is this all! Well, in any organization, there are people who are like a horses or donkeys with eye covers, also known as blinders or fly masks, so that we keep our eye on the work and work only! This post is akin to such a scenario.
With many changes happening at the workplace, what could be the new story of an employee!
What if the new entrants of these organization are given an induction training to keep the work place clear, bring more empathy, and give them time to pursue other things that are important for their life and well being.!
As Bob Dylan signs, "Times are changing", we need a new framework and a bit of overhauling of work culture and pathers. And, more importantly revamp KSR rules which is an archaic rule book!
Also, we require a new mindset to make things better! As regards work, AI is coming to rob most of the monotonous work which you are currently doing. So, an employee can provide more empathy, judgement which AI currently can't do.
This is where I feel our employees and staff at Govt or in autonomous or private enterprises has a bigger role to play.
Here are two instances that caught my eye:
# Scenario 1
A KSRTC Volvo bus overtook me and was driving ahead. The volvo bus looked a bit run down with many km covered in service. Worse than the shape of the bus was the dust and dirt covered the entire part of the bus. This is when I thought that it would be a great, if the conductor and the driver took a little effort to clean or wipe the glasses and the doorway of the bus
# Scenario 2
BEVCO outlet at Mulavana. I visited this outlet to buy beer. Thanks to the initiative of the top brass of this organization, all units have an excellent track record of keeping is one of the most unclean Govt site. In this outlet at Mulavana, bills are seen all around - on the stairs, on the walls, on the floor. What a pathetic sight! And, to give them company, there are few empty bottles. What a Shame!
What if the staff were given a small financial incentive to mop, broom the sides of this building eveyday and keep it spic and span! Btw, I wish I could do this job for FREE after seeing the state of affairs. What's wrong with the attitude of the heads of these outlets!
This is a biz and profit making spot! At least respect the fact that people are paying to feed the coffers! And top of it, we have highly paid bureaucrats managing theses. Now, at least, get the basics cleanliness right!
What did you See at BEVCO Outlet?
What if we form a team to do a cleanup mission to scrub, pay for waste baskets, buy mop, cleaning materials?
Btw, let's suppose the management feels there not much funds to keep a person to clean the premises on a daily basis. In that case we have to find an additional revenue stream and here's a suggestion:
A better Plan to Generate Income and to Hire a Full Time Cleaner
Let's now think of a small booth inside BEVCO compound. Each such booth will be a profit centre and make money to hire a full time cleaner in each bevco store.
So, here are things which this store will sell to make additional income:
1. Sell bags ( recycled paper bags good enough to carry 4 or 5 beer bottles)
2. Sell pickles and boiled eggs as starters
3. Sell quick bites made by Kudambashree in the local area. ( Each day by evening, they freshly made food/snacks, such as 250gm container of chicken dry, gravy, beef, egg boiled with peas or chicken liver or salads). The taste and quality of the supplier will checked prior for quality. Only a limited quality will be supplied daily.
4. Sell packed ice cubes, cold cola, bottled tender coconut water, Bisleri water, disposable eco-friendly glasses, mint and lemon for Vodka mix, peg measure, etc
- Now, if this booth is managed well, it can generate additional income to pay for the employee managing this booth, provide an opportunity for Kudambashree units, and the best part it can hire a person to keep this premises as a positive and clean business place. Btw, they can hire a person from the locality to do this job. Preferably a differently able lady in her 30's who can do the job perfectly well.
( So, it's an opportunity to give employment to two more people in Bevco unit ( Part-time employees) and secondary income opportunity for many others).
Hello, fat cats 🐱🐱 of BEVCO are you listening 👂!
NB - Here's an thing I like to share to explain the above point! We have a lady who comes in the morning to prepare breakfast. She's a good cook who comes around 7ish. To reach the kitchen, she takes the side path..
So, the path she takes is often the area where our dogie shits 💩! And, today the shit was in two spots, right on the path she takes. However, she is not bothered buy the sight. She just walk past it, often side stepping the poo.
So, here's the question? Why is she not concerned about it? Why does she take little bit of effort to clear dog shit lying on her path?
The answer to this is simple. Picking of poo is not part of her job. She is here to do cooking!
I guess, the same thing applies at Bevco stalls! It's not my job! Why should I do a job of a sweeper? While I say all these, I'm also part of the same crowd and I do the same! Yes, I would do the same as a bevco employee. With ample job in this office, why should I take-up unwanted or unrequited responsibility?
Let's define what does a good work looks like? |
It's easier to ignore any other tasks and stick the job only to what is giving in the play book. Almost 98% of the employees has this mindset. That's my fair estimation of how we work in an organization.
! Often, we don't take additional responsibility at work fearing that it will fall on our head. Isn't so!
Btw, I have a good sample by Seth Godin about this!
