Make Every City Centre Memorable

Malappuram - City Centre

Malayala Manorama is lucky have it's name at Malappuram city centre. It's name is on this circular structure right at the heart of Malappuram city. It's right on the middle of the road, right opposite to KSRTC depot at Malapuram, a point almost everyone crosses to reach Calicut or Trichur or Manjeri

I'm not sure when it was constructed or what purpose it was created, but this stands as a icon of the city like many other landmarks.

Make Every Arch, Monument Memorable!

Long back while I was working at Malapuram and I used to think how Malayala Manorama can make this structure a centre piece or make it a talking point!

Here's how!

1. Keep lights which will illuminate this structure at night. ( preferably run on solar) ( And just like we see in Burj Khalifa, it can showcase different theme color based on special days). For example in Indian Independence Day, it can display colours of the tricolour. Just an example!

2. Grow plants like bougainvilla on the top of the circular arch. Probably, they have to modify it slightly to keep the plants. Imagine seeing cascading flowers from the top. People will love to take picture of it, share it as their city centre.

3. Make this space clean with regular scrub and wash. Also, for publicity of Malayla Manorama, they can keep a QR code which will take visitors to their breaking news page! Btw, is there an online page, where breaking news comes first or is it just on the home-page of the newsletter?

Making each structure more meaningful

Just making a structure, or a statue commemorating a person doesn't have much meaning. There should be something more to it. There should be some way to share the story of that statue or arch or building so that people knows more about and the story is made alive.

Keeping  Bougainville on Top of this Circular Building

I can't think of any other plant than bougainville which can stand the harsh sunlight and the occasional rain.

Another way to keep this circular space beautiful is by changing the flowering posts. So, it the pots are changed regularly, then this spot will always look attractive with fresh floral cascades. This would require regular work of rotating flowering ones and replacing old ones. I think, in big cities like Dubai, they keep changing the flower beds to make the city look beautiful and attractive.

So, apart from keeping flowering pot on this structure, what else can you think of? What all can it add value to the people who pass by? What about the signage about temperature, air quality or anything else that's significant.

Just thinking at Malappuram!
