How to read from this board!

This post is not about my visit and pics of Anjuthengu fort, but my observations about how we can showcase these historical monuments to local visitors, and foreigners.

Few points here:

1. The plaque at the entrance of the fort tells the history of this fort. Bit, it's hardly legible to read. So, how can we have a display which makes it easy for visitors to know the history in one glance? What about a board which shows the timeline of this fort through the ages)

Another way to provide more information to visitors is through a booklet or a website or a blog. These can be effective to tell a story.

Who can Sponsor a Clear Information Board at Anjuthengu Fort?
Probably, a travel agency or tourism agency or a hotel in Varkala or any biz can take the financial responsibility to sponsor a booklet or a microsite about Anjuthengu fort. The booklet with relevant images, history, and  timeline chart, etc will be a good way to share the information about the fort and surrounding areas.

They can print the booklet, and sell postcards with pictures of the this historical monument. I guess, it would be a good way to promote this place. Now imagine, if there's a desk and a post-box kept near the fort where people can buy postcard, fix stand and drop it at this post box. What if someone facilitate all the required things so that visitors can mail cards from here. We need people with empathy, care and love towards such activities to take such a mission.

I know that most of us don't have the habit of sending cards, let alone post one! However, there could be few who, could think of sending postcards from this point. But, someone at the site should take the initative to suggest this to visitors. Also, provide the cards, glue, pen, etc so that it can be done without any missteps. Also, before putting a postcard, they can take a selfie with the pic of fort and postbox in the same pic.

Sale of Informational Booklet about Anchuthengu Fort
What if such booklets are available, just for Rs 15. Well, again someone has to bear the cost of subsidized booklet. In return, they can get one or two advertisement inside the booklet.

Point 2 - What if there's a board with a QR code which takes to a website, with elaborate video, and text and audio story of this place? What if there's a separate site for this historical site or it could be part of Kerala Tourism portal. Whichever way, the point is people who wish to know more should be given the possibility to learn and know more at this fort itself.

How's a simple timeline of history made?

Sample one made from Wiki ( Not complete)

What I have made above is a simple one made by spending 30 minutes on Canva app and content from Wiki. So, if a lay person like me can create a chart like this, then a team or an organization can make an infographic chart, with images or drawings along with year! It would be fantastic!

So, if you're a graphic designer  or historian or a just a person who has interest to create a historical log of place, then you can do it! Btw, such initiatives could be taken by a history department in Kerala University. They can take up as a side project. And, start with Anjuthengu Fort time-line as the first project. Also, someone can write a blog, or create a booklet or make a timeline chart (board at the site) or other methods to make information clear to visitors.

Which are the monuments that you can think of now?

1. Story of Methan Mani next to the Padmanabha Swamy Temple, East Fort
2. Punjakari
3. Napier museum
4. Kanakakunnu palace
5. Kovalam beach ( Hippie era to now)

6. The Halcyon Castle
7. East fort and West Fort

P.S Btw, when I started to write, I didn't have any thought about creating a time-line chart nor I never thought of the suggestion of involving history department in colleges in documenting historical monuments.

All these points, just came when I started to write. So, net-net, my suggestion is just this - start a blog and start writing on it on any topic that matters to you.

If you need help on starting a blogger blog, then I'm just a click or call away.
